So, my dad and I are getting a car as sort of a joint belated Christmas gift to ourselves. We finally settled on a price limit and stuff, so here it is:
$1600 max
1994 or older ( we want a legal antique)
Running, or almost running.
Clean title.
And here are a couple on Facebook I’m considering:

Beater NA Miata? Not sure how much VW Beetles are near you, but they can be fun and inexpensive.
Maybe a super rough MGB?

Courier is dang cool. That Cougar is huuuuuuuge. For no reason in particular, I feel like truck will be easier to source parts for.

I like this idea!
Quick look in my area gave me this:

I’d say thats a bit over priced as it looks to be in worse condition than mine was and I’d paid 1250 for mine . but the asking on mine was 1700 so thats worth considering too.
the parts car could be and probably is worthless. the expensive parts are the top and rubber seals, and those are most likely shot on both.

I live in the anti-rust belt, so Miatas are nearly impossible to find under $ 2k, sadly. I’m sure we would both get a kick out of one, though!

You may be right. Weirdly, I’ve seen at least two other Couriers for sale recently, so I guess there are definitely some around.

Oh, I’m not recommending that they buy it. Just spitballing! =)

Make a viral ad and Nissan will restore it for you! Maybe.

I feel like there’s a couple people who might want that more than you though.

Uh, YES. Except it doesn’t need restoring.
Okay okay I’ll be serious now.

Put a 2.2 Turbo in it and you got a winner.

You can’t go wrong with a Turbo Buick. You can’t.

there’s a Beetle on Delaware Craigslist, complete but not put together. Chassis restored (floors) new brake parts etc. Dunno all the details as I breezed through it so unsure of engine condition. Looked like an interesting project if it is indeed all there as you’d only need to assemble and paint essentially . $2k best offer I think.
My mom had a 78 Cougar when I was in middle school. I’m pretty sure the truck would be more fun as it’s simpler, more fun and would carry more interest. A 78 Cougar is meh.

‘92 NA Miata. It should be a long-nose crank so no wobble issues unlike earlier short-nose 1.6L Miatas.

Personally, get this one even though it’s 25% over your budget because it needs paint and some other things but looks like a better starting point. Wheels not included, you get 16" wheels instead. Take a gamble on the replaced motor, dunno if it’s a long-nose crank or maybe a 1.8L swap if you’re lucky.

Ah they pop up with fair regularity here in DC. They’re rough or high miles but serviceable. Here’s an NB in Gadsen with 150K and some cosmetic/maintenance needs - $1800 negotiable

ETA: here’s another, less than $1000, but pretty rough cosmetically:
